Analysis and Design of Data Warehouses
نویسنده
چکیده
With the large-scale introduction of the data warehouse concept, a new phenomenon has appeared in the field of information systems development. Facts in a data warehouse – as opposed to those in an operational database – mainly represent immutable, aggregated or otherwise derived, historical information. The aggregation level and specific layout of management information reports often cannot be specified on beforehand. Therefore, a data warehouse must be designed in such a way, that it provides optimal support for aggregation on the fly and for navigation through aggregation hierarchies, that it allows easy access to time series and that it enables reporting in any desired layout. This publication describes the outline of two complementary methods for the analysis of data warehouse relations; one simple and the other advanced. The simple method exploits the knowledge contained in an ordinary relational schema. The advanced method is based on the analysis of derivation rules. Subsequently, the design of data warehouses based on these methods is investigated. Special attention has been given to the actuality of data warehouses that contain historical information, to the transitivity of derivations, to the navigation through aggregation hierarchies via so-called drill paths and to the maintenance of various aggregation levels within a single data warehouse relation.

Background: Due to the presence of valuable and expensive equipments in hospitals’ warehouses, scientific management and continuous evaluation plays an important role to improve the performance of warehouses and whereby the performance of hospitals’ wards. This study aimed to evaluate the performance of the central stores of hospitals affiliated to Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS). ...
متن کاملA Three-Echelon Multi-Objective Multi-Period Multi-Product Supply Chain Network Design Problem: A Goal Programming Approach
In this paper, a multi-objective multi-period multi-product supply chain network design problem is introduced. This problem is modeled using a multi-objective mixed integer mathematical programming. The objectives are maximizing the total profit of logistics, maximizing service level, and minimizing inconsistency of operations. Several sets of constraints are considered to handle the real situa...
متن کاملData Warehouse Schema Design
A data warehouse is an integrated database primarily used in organizational decision making. Although the deployment of data warehouses is current practice in modern information technology landscapes, the methodical schema design for such databases has only been studied cursorily. In this paper we pursue schema design for data warehouses in the spirit of classical database design, organized as ...
متن کاملA Proposed Data Mining Methodology and its Application to Industrial Procedures
Data mining is the process of discovering correlations, patterns, trends or relationships by searching through a large amount of data stored in repositories, corporate databases, and data warehouses. Industrial procedures with the help of engineers, managers, and other specialists, comprise a broad field and have many tools and techniques in their problem-solving arsenal. The purpose of this st...
متن کاملGRAnD: A goal-oriented approach to requirement analysis in data warehouses
Several surveys indicate that a significant percentage of data warehouses fail to meet business objectives or are outright failures. One of the reasons for this is that requirement analysis is typically overlooked in real projects. In this paper we propose GRAnD, a goal-oriented approach to requirement analysis for data warehouses based on the Tropos methodology. Two different perspectives are ...
